What is generative AI? A plain-English guide

Generative AI is software that produces new content, such as text, images, audio or code, in response to a request you type in. Chatbots and image generators are the most familiar examples.

Quick facts
  • It creates new text, images, audio or code
  • It learns patterns from large amounts of data
  • It can sound confident and still be wrong
  • Treat output as a draft, not a final answer

How it works

These systems are trained on very large collections of examples. During training they learn statistical patterns, such as which words tend to follow others. When you ask a question, a language model builds an answer piece by piece, choosing likely next words. It does not look up a single stored answer.

What it does well

  • Drafting and rewriting text
  • Summarising long documents
  • Brainstorming ideas and names
  • Explaining concepts at different levels
  • Translating and reformatting content

Where it struggles

It can state false things confidently, may reflect biases in its training data and can be unreliable with precise facts, calculations and recent events unless it has access to up-to-date sources. It does not truly understand the world the way a person does.

A sensible mindset

Think of generative AI as a fast, tireless assistant that needs supervision. Use it to get started, then check, edit and take responsibility for the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is generative AI the same as ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT is one product built on this kind of technology. Generative AI is the broader category, which also includes image, audio and code generators.

Does generative AI understand what it writes?

Not in the human sense. It predicts plausible output from patterns in its training data, which is why it can be fluent and still wrong.
